The brand includes more than 700 stores, of which over 500 are located in the United Kingdom, and more than 200 are across the Middle East, Asia and Europe. It's among the largest clothing retailer store by sales in the UK.

Joseph Hepworth started the firm in the year 1864 in Leeds as a tailor store. When it was first launched, its name was Joseph Hepworth & Son. During its establishment, Joseph was in a partnership with Rhodes James, but it was terminated or dissolved in the year 1872. Under his management, Hepworth expanded the organisation rapidly, making it become a pioneer for the design and development of the chain stores in Britain, and by the year 1884, the firm had more than 100 outlets.
For much of the firm's development history, Joseph was predominantly in the famous ready-to-wear suit mark before bringing in Saville Row designer in the year 1963 to help in the revitalisation of the company's ready-to-wear suit design collections. After James Hepworth and the Son were affected by the old age, the company was later managed by Chairperson Terence Conran.
However, its founders made a bold step to remake it completely in the 1980s, and in the year 1981, the firm acquired Kendall's retail store, which had over 80 locations catered to women's products market that complimented the Hepworth and Son men's products line.
