White Stuff is a British company that was founded in 1985 by Sean Thomas and George Treves. The two founders were close friends and keen skiers who decided to sell t-shirts and sweat shirts to help fund their hobby. They created unique designs under the name of ‘Boys from the White Stuff’ which became popular among the regular skiers at Val d’sere. As their success grew with their brand, they decided to open a store in Clapham, London in 1991. Today there are over 110 stores across the whole of the UK with some stores also in Germany and Belgium. Their head office is located in South West London.
White Stuff have a mission to be different, original and true. They sell clothing for women and children and have a range of accessories. The general feel of the brand is informal, with a slight surfer vibe to the clothing. The brand offers products that are casual, colourful and comfortable to wear. Bright colours and intricate prints can be seen in most of the items and the patterns used are unique to White Stuff. They like to add small interesting details into items, such as unusual buttons, interesting openings or tiny extra characters in a print design. This ensures that each product is unique and they add a little joy for the buyer. The designs are practical as well, with each item being sensibly useful and fit for its purpose.
In the clothing range, White Stuff offers jeans, trousers, skirts, dresses, tops, knitwear, coats and shoes for women and children. The clothing is well made and natural fabrics and yarns are used the majority of the time. The shapes and styles create a casual look that is easy to wear. In the accessories range, there is a collection of jolly hats, scarfs, shoes, socks and tights. Home ware items include mugs, cushions, throws and candles, all of which feature fun motifs and bright, cheerful colours. All of the products are light hearted in design but practical to use.
The company has a mission to connect with their customers and be part of the community and they strive to make this happen. Their shops have a homely and welcoming feel and they encourage the whole family including pets to come come inside. Some of the changing rooms have themes, such as Alice in Wonderland, to make the shopping experience even more fun. They have an active social media presence and have Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram pages. They are informal and friendly in their communication and encourage feedback from customers.
The White Stuff company have strong beliefs about community and responsibility. They have a team who check the working conditions of their suppliers and will stop using producers who do not offer a fair workplace and pay. They have a foundation which supports 100 charities in the UK and every one of the stores has its own charity to work alongside. As well as this, the company donates 1% of its profits to charity every year as a matter of course. The White Stuff Foundation offers scholarships and also works hard to offer educational opportunities.
