C&A's brands include Your Sixth Sense, Yessica Pure, Yessica, Westbury, Rodeo (snowboard and ski clothes), Palomino, Here+There, Clockhouse, Canda and Angelo Litrico. C&A group is owned by the Brenninkmeijer family through Cofra Holding AG, a Swiss company. The success of the company has made the Dutch to consider them among the Netherlands' wealthiest.
Two brothers, August and Clemen Brenninkmeijer, are the founders of the company. They started the business as a Dutch textile firm, taking the name of the company from their initials. Bernard Joseph, Clemens' son, began discounting in Amsterdam in 1906; by 1910, there were a total of 10 stores in the Netherlands. They were from the Brenninkmeyer family from German who traded in textiles and linen from the seventeenth century from Mettingen, Germany, its hometown.
For many years, the retail clothing stores of the company were a major presence throughout the UK, in the town centres. Also, the company opened stores several locations that are out-of-town. Most notably, in November 1989, it opened its store at the West Midlands-based Merry Hill Shopping Centre.
C&A in the UK was an incorporated private unlimited business, meaning that the company wasn't required to declare its financial statements under UK law. In 2000, the company announced its intention of withdrawing from the British market, a place where it had been running since 1922. The last retail stores in the UK closed in 2001. Primark purchased eleven of the company stores. The company ended up withdrawing from the Argentinian market in June 2009. C&A China competes with the main clothing companies. In 2010, Beyonce, a popular entertainer, released her clothing line called Deréon, in cooperation with the company.
